Threads That Bind Us~

Spools of Thread

I raise needle to my eye level
Impatiently, feed the licked end
Through the eye; tie a knot
Begin my careful stitches…
I want to cross-stitch your name
Muttering grace after grace
on a casement spread
Under the laburnum dripping gold…
Tell me, why life is short
Why is it bliss and what its price..?

Fond husband...
It is late noon in our backyard
Our spirits, like the cut flowers
Have begun to wane…
Before the night leans against the door
I must finish my crafts-work; weaving
My joys, my longings, my incoherent mutterings,
Gift wrap them in intractable scents and sweats
-to let you feel and smell through
----- a lace-draped window
in the night of leave-taking

             When there’s no light…
Us could remain with all the fond details
…with feelings: not obsessed, therefore pure.
             to tidy up your mind
In the silence of my sickroom
Clasp me with your frail hands for the last time
And leave….

  1. Very vividly described the putting of thread in the needle and it must be very nice to weave the name of beloved.

  2. Panchaliji, you have an eye for details. The threading of the needle , embroidering the name of the beloved with coloured thread , the imagery of times of the day are very well woven.

  5. A very thoughtful poem, Panchali. Indeed in a lifetime one has only so much time to do one's 'weaving' before the light wanes. The last stanza is very moving. Hopefully before the two clasp hands for the last time, all the stitches will have been made and one's life work will have been completed.

    1. Thanks for coming by and sharing your thoughts... Been a long time since I cross stitched & seems like I've forgotten some things., so got into this in-depth cross-stitching.
Thanks you so much, can't wait to actually complete the work before the light gets lost in an abyss of darkness.
      Thanks a bunch, Mary! :)

  6. Panchali, you wondered why you had not received an announcement of the prompt. If you have 'joined' the Poetry Jam site, you should have. That is if you have something like "Feedly" which delivers new posts to you. Another way is to follow Poetry Jam on Facebook, where the new posts are also announced. (But really they go up the same time every Tuesday night - here - and will continue to do so, but we will be taking a short break of two weeks over the holiday season.) Always happy to see you there!

  7. Labor of love for an endearing person. It's just fascinating to be shown the patience expected in weaving and knitting. Not to talk of the talents and skills involved. Great job in the poetry and also the weaving Panchali!

  11. nice...weaving is like a meditation, a doing over and over and an act of creation...
the end is bitter sweat for me...the giving of them the permission to move on, at least as i read it...
