Writing Is Exhaling

Loved by blogadda~ thanks!!

Writing to me is… Exhaling slowly!!

There is nature in excess
Splayed out in front of us;
 Dancing, pushing, disappearing—
Completely narcissistic and shameless!
I choose strangest of places; crouch there in silence
Trying to catch hold of a canvas--within
At a turn of every trail- there's
A panorama of beauty- seeking its way
Impulsively, it takes my mind in its grip
Oh me!
My heart starts thumping wildly…
I go out…
Start searching again....
Amused at my efforts
I hold my breath. And
Exhale…!! That's my initiation..
...a green blade of grass shivers
I accuse her of losing patience; turn around
Start peeling the landscape, tier over tier
Think of surrealism, metaphors, symbolism, art; and
bring out my notebook; and start writing!!
Such grand exhibitions travel to me often
Writing seems, an eternal sojourn...
A relentless drip-drip of words,
refresh the parts of my brain that needs motivation
What a joy to see my notes---somewhere, sometime.
Art is certainly not independent of its surrounding!
But for the current moment, I am taking the time
to draw in a nice long breath--Inhale!!
I intend to exhale it slowly, next time :D

I love this quote.... " Reading is the inhale, writing is the exhale."--Justine Musk.
Two separate things yet inexplicably linked....

  1. Loved the it's portrayed...but somehow i don't like the idea of smoking...whether it's real or only a metaphorical use...i don't why people always relate smoking to stress buster, relaxing minds, to think better or clear...only thing which is does is bearing disaster to one lungs or a body as a whole...!!!

i liked the concept a lot...and yes i agree writing is exhaling...exhaling what you preach, think or would probably do or react in a particular circumstances

    1. Oh, Anjan...This has got nothing to do with smoking actually-- I used it metaphorically! Here, I'm basically talking about the candid brain and its breathing process...when the pathways in the brain are clear... the brain gets receptive and lets the images absorb in and I start writing..which is an escape, a process of exhaling! :D
      Thanks...

    1. Sherry, I believe, any piece of old writing is incredibly fascinating for a poet. For me, that old notebook is close to my heart..it is the co-custodian of my memory and childhood.
Childhood is where I first began to love words...the process of inhaling and exhaling started right there!! :)
Thanks a lot for that lovely comment.

  7. Panchali, I love thinking about writing as exhaling. I never thought of it that way, but it makes sense. We inhale our experiences and exhale them onto a sheet of paper (or a blog). And yes, the drip drip. May it never stop...for any of us. Beautifully composed poem, one that will stay with me.

    1. Mary, Literature is, and has always been, the sharing of experience, the pooling of human understanding about living, loving, and writing. Yes, may the drip drip continue... and the interplay between the grammar and breath of lines keep spinning. There's a wonderful sense of satisfaction and, yes, enjoyment… 'exhaling them onto a paper-sheet'!!
Thanks for that awesome compliment... specially coming from you...means a lot!! :))))

  8. Writing is exhaling - what a thought... and I love how you've pointed out how the most meagre of occurrences can stimulate one to verse - like the movement of a blade of grass....

As always, my fervent admiration of your work and my twinge of envying your talent go hand in hand... Beautiful...
