A Fire
Dripping with spring’s laburnum
Whirl in divine ecstasy
Sows the quilt of love and harmony
Souls become one...
....shaping together a life
of dreams, of ideals, of passions
Hearts interlock,
hands reach out
barefoot, they walk around the fire
For the ‘seven steps...
The priest chants
He leads… she follows
Agreeing to keep the vows
In the still of the night
walking hand in hand
Total strangers under the open sky
Gradually....
Feel the fire erasing niches between them
A beautiful union blossoms…
Linking souls and senses
A marriage
Perfectly planned in heaven
Seal the bond forever with
The SEVEN VOWS !!
Taking ‘Seven vows’
undertaken by the bride and the groom around a sacred fire in Hindu wedding is
compulsory. Fire is considered sacred and vows taken in front of Agnideva (God of fire) as the witness
apparently seals the bond forever.
The fire's flames are a powerful symbol of life and death and of heat and uncertainty. How beautiful your poem is.
ReplyDeleteAn excellent poem that brings out the significance of Saptapathi,an integral component of Hindu marriages.
ReplyDeleteI looked up the Hindi vows to accompany my understanding of the marriage in this beauiful poem. Wow! I especially love how the steps and the vows help"Feel the fire erasing niches between them." Thank you, thank you!
ReplyDeleteI found this very interesting, Panchali. The Seven Vows sound like a wonderful beginning of a marriage!
ReplyDeleteThis makes me think of the beautiful scene in Gandhi, where he and his wife, walk seven times around the circle. A beautiful scene and a beautiful poem.
