What is the secret of writing??? Why do writers write? Many literary writers anchored writing to their daily routines. And yet, the answer remained elusive and ever-changing…
Real writers are those who want to write, need to write, have to write…they must write; and they need no reason to write!!! I find it difficult to believe that I'm something close to a writer; but this hasn't stopped me from dreaming…or blogging.
My reason for writing is mainly neurotic, I suspect: I am never really comfortable speaking about my emotions, so writing allows me to give shape to my emotions –when there’s an inexplicable need to share my fantasies, I use writing as a particular medium-the routine is joyous when it works! I write when I have ideas. I hear voices. And I have learned, shooting little missiles of letters methodically create rhythm of a story/ poem---rhythms that captivate me and my readers. Though, I must confess, writing was easy when no one was reading it. I am self-conscious now :-) But still...
Writing gives me enormous joy, and I'm a much happier homemaker when I'm engaged in it. There's a rich place that connects my head to my heart that I visit when I write. I talk about the images shimmering around the edge of my mind….I shed all wraps of shyness and write whatever comes to my mind–- I first went there when I was seven and wrote a poem.
Today, I write blogs, however badly written…, they are because of my love for playing with words. Sometimes it is difficult, at times it's impossible to come up with anything good. Especially, when I am writing for daily prompts; it's an exercise, all in pursuit to finish a challenge; and sometimes when I read it back, I realize, that I've produced an irresistible filth...yet, I write.
Wonder, if there’s a secret to writing? I suspect there is, but I don't know it. I just spend hours writing and re-writing, and then deleting it all and starting again. I sometimes think there must be an easier way - if anyone knows the secret, please do share through your comments.
Thanks Usha Menon for introducing me to WriteTribe!

ReplyDeleteWriting is a passion and more...
It is a compulsion and more...
It is an escape and more...
It is everything and still so much more!!!
Thanks a bunch....! I am SO pleased you liked this, Nabanita )
DeleteThat is so poetic. You surely know how to write Panchali. :)
ReplyDeleteAwe... good to see you here, Ava..Thanks a lot !!
DeleteI enjoyed reading why you write, Panchali. Like you, I enjoy the playing with words. I also realize that all that I write is not wonderful. If I am really in love with one poem out of five that I write I consider that a good thing! (Smiles) The others I am still glad I have written though just because they are my thoughts / words. Maybe someday someone will treasure them....when I am gone. (I can hope.)
ReplyDeleteOh Mary, good to know that we all suffer silently while writing. In our writings we describe exhaustively a moment of true feeling..., therefore, the write ups require a few slight adjustments here and there. But, it's no secret that you write so well.
DeleteOh, I too would love to leave my works for my future progeny...let's hope they'll treasure them...amen!:)
Oh yes Di! for the sheer love of it and when you do, you don't need a reason, do you?:) So keep writing and enthrall us!

Deleteits how well you have explained the helplessness of us writers to that question that touches me the most. Of course that is so true.. when someone asks us why we write its like a shot in arm. Like we ourselves never wondered!
ReplyDeleteRicha
Richa. It was only after a friend's arm-twisting that I started to write again after many years. I am surprised I managed fine...Yes, it's difficult for a writer to explain why he writes. So good to see you here... :))
